Defeating  the Japanese Empire

Japanese plans for China as of 3 December 1941.

A. Secure area and restore public order.

B. Secure communications along Yangtze River and eliminate enemy resistance.

C. Occupy strategic areas.

Following the Japanese invasion of China in 1937, the capital was moved west from Nangking (Nanjing) to Chungking. The city remained China's capital throughout the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937 - 1945).

Japanese sphere in early December 1941. Japan and Russia agreed in 1875 that Japan could have the Kuril Islands and Russia would have Sakhalin Island. With Japan's defeat of Russia in the 1905 Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan took the south of Sakhalin Island. Japan and Russia agreed to divide Korea at the 38th Parallel but after Russia's loss in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, Japan took entire Korean Peninsula, along with Port Arthur. Japan annexed Korea in 1910. Japan claimed Taiwan in 1895. Japan secured its rule in Manchuria during then years 1931 to 1936. Japan moved into Jehol in 1933. Japan invaded China in 1937.

Colonel Claire Chennault, American advisor to Chiang Kai-Shek and the China Air Force, brought American pilots, mechanics and planes    -   called the First American Volunteer Group (AVG)   -   to Burma in late 1941, before the Japanese launched their attack across the central and southwest Pacific.

The 1st AVG flew its first combat missions in December 1941.

The 1st AVG was replaced by the U. S. Army Air Force (U. S. Army Air Corps) in July 1942.

Chennault was recalled to the U. S. army, promoted to brigadier-general, and took command of the China Air Task Force, which replaced the AVG, with responsibility for all air operations in China for the U. S. Tenth Air Force, headquartered in India.

In March 1943, the China Air Task Force was replaced by the new U. S. Fourteenth Air Force, separate from the Tenth Air Force.

Chennault was promoted to the rank of major-general by American president FDR and took command of the 14th Air Force, with its headquarters in Kunming.

The Ledo Road/Burma Road and "The Hump"/"Aluminum Trail"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt5w3vqw_Bs&feature=related

The Himalayan Mountain Range, called "The Hump", separates the Indian sub-continent and China.

The Japanese cut rail transport from Indo-China to China in December 1940.

In early 1941, the Soviets and the Japanese signed a neutrality pact and the Soviets ended trade with China and cut supply routes to China.

By early 1942, the Japanese controlled most of East China Coast.

IJanuary 1942, the Japanese invaded Burma and by May 1942 controlled Rangoon and Myitkyina and closed the Burma Road to China.

Supplies could not reach China by land or sea.

Thus, the Allies had to fly troops and supplies from India to China over the Himalayan Mountain Range   -   "The Hump".

Cargo flights over "The Hump" began in April 1942 and ended in November 1945.

Planes based in India flew over "The Hump", often blind through thick clouds and against sudden strong winds.

Many planes crashed in the mountains and jungles. Planes were made of aluminum. Thus, The Hump was called also "The Aluminum Trail".

The Solomon Islands Campaign

23 August 1942 - 25 December 1943

The Solomon Islands on a globe

Germany claimed the northern Solomon Islands of Bougainville, Buka, Choiseul, Shortland, the Treasury Islands and Santa Isabel in 1885. Germany claimed the island of Ontong Java in 1893.

The British claimed the southern Solomon Islands in 1893 and the eastern Solomon Islands in 1899.

By the Treaty of Berlin in 1899, the Germans gave all of their northern Solomon Islands except Bougainville to the British in 1900. (The treaty recognised German claims to the island of Western Samoa in the South Pacific.)

The Australians took Bougainville Island from the Germans in the Great Wat (1914 - 1918).

The Japanese attacked the Solomon Islands in early 1942 and occupied them.

April 18, 1943

The US Navy intercepted and decrypted a message on April 14 informing Japanese air units in the Solomon Islands that Admiral Yamamoto scheduled a tour for April 18. Yamamoto would depart from his headquarters in Rabaul on New Britain at 6:00 a. m. and arrive at the Japanese air base on Balalae Island south of Bougainville Island at 8:00 a. m. (Tokyo time). Yamamoto and his staff would fly in two Mitsubishi G4M "Betty" bombers escorted by six Zero fighters.

Lockheed P-38 Lightning

Four of the P-38s would attack Yamamoto's party while the others were held in reserve and flew at 18,000 feet to cover against possible fighter attacks. Two of the four-planes turned back due to malfunctions and were replaced.

To avoid detection by radar and coastal watchers, the P-38s maintained radio silence and flew a circuitous route at 50 feet above the sea and below the horizons of islands en route to the intercept point. They dead reckoned all the way.

Yamamoto was intercepted right on schedule, ten minutes and 30 miles north of Balalae, at 4,000 feet.

Frame from P-38 gun camera footage of the two Mitsubishis Betty bombers sighted. One of the planes carried Admiral Yamamoto.

One of the four P-38s broke off due to a malfunction. A second escorted it. The remaining two fighters climbed after the two Betty bombers.

The bombers dove to evade the P-38s by flying low over the jungle.

One Betty was shot down and crashed in the jungle and the other crash-landed in the sea. Survivors were rescued shortly afterwards. Yamamoto was not on this plane.

One P-38, escorting the plane with a malfunction, did not return and presumed lost at sea.

February 17–18, 1944

Truk Atoll in the Caroline Islands was the Imperial Japanese Navy's main base of operations and supplied Japanese forces throughout the central and south Pacific.

To achieve American superiority in the air and at sea before its planned invasion of the Marshall Island of Eniwetok, the US navy attacked Truk, the closest Japanese airbase, and neutralized it.

However, the Japanese considered Truk unsafe and moved must of their shipping out a week before the American attack.

Another American air attack on Truk on April 29 and 30 destoyed some 100 Japanese aircraft moved there recently from Rabaul.

B-29 Superfortress

B-29 Superfortress

The Doolittle raid over Japan in April 1942, launched from an aircraft carrier in the Pacific, was the first aerial bombing raid of Japan in the war.

In July 1943, American B-24 and B-25 bombers, took off from recaptured Attu Island in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska and bombed Japanese bases in the Kuril Islands, a long chain of islands between the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Japanese north home island of Hokkaido.

At the Cairo Conference in November 1943, Chiang Kai-shek pressed FDR for planes to bomb Japanese home islands with. FDR promised planes by the New Year. But they did not arrive in India before May 1944.

The B-29 Superfortresses arrived in India in May 1942. Many were stripped of guns and used to ferry supplies over "The Hump". The B-29 averaged one combat mission for every six cargo runs over the Himalayas.

Bangkok, 5 June 1944

On 5 June 1944, 98 B-29s took off from India to bomb Bangkok. This was the first B-29 bombing raid of the war. Seventy-seven B-29s reached Bangkok at 11:00 a. m. and bombed from 17,000 and 27,000 feet. Eighteen bombs hit the Makasan rail yards. A Japanese military hospital and the secret police headquarters were damaged.

Bangkok was bombed many times during the war.

The B-29 had a range of almost 3,000 nautical miles. Thus, it could strike a target 1,500 nautical miles away. From bases in western China, the B-29 could reach the southern Japanese home island of Kyushu.

B-29s flew bombing missions over Japan from China to the end of January 1945 and from India to the end of March 1945.

LeMay

[LeMay_01.jpg]

Maj. Gen. Curtis E. LeMay, commanded B-29 bombing raids over Japan from August 1944 to war's end.

LeMay commanded bombing missions from China from August 1944 to January 1945.

LeMay took command of bombing raids from the Mariana Islands in January 1945.

LeMay arranged with Mao Tse-Tung, leader of the Chinese Communists in northern China, to help downed American pilots in the region. Many years later, in 1971, Mao Tse-Tung recalled that he had an old friend in America called Kurt Lee-May.

28 Years in the Jungle (Jap soldier refused to surrender)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z038hpQsY04

                                            -----------------------

The situation in October 1944

Master of the Pacific

The US navy defeated and destroyed the Japanese naval fleet and air force in the naval battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944.

The US navy now controlled the air and the sea.

It was master of the Pacific. Japan’s defeat was certain.

With the Japanese capability of waging war so severely reduced, the US navy planned a blockade of Japan. Eventually, Japan would be without oil and food and forced to surrender.

Meanwhile, the aerial bombardment of military and industrial sites would continue.

It was estimated that Japan under siege would surrender in two years.

The US army did not want to wait to occupy Japan. The earliest possible date for an invasion was late 1945.

There were arguments for and against an invasion of Japan. The main argument against an invasion was that it would cost an estimated two million Allied casualties with a half-million Allied deaths.

There were also arguments for and against the blockade.

The steady aerial bombardment of Japan, even if highly destructive, was not having the desired demoralizing effect upon the Japanese people that would compel their leaders to surrender.

The longer the blockade lasted, and the more the Japanese suffered as a result, the more the possibility that world opinion could turn against the blockade.

The Allies prepared both the blockade and the invasion of Japan.

It was believed that the Allied invasion of the four Japanese home or main islands  -  Kyushu, Shikoku, Honshu and Hokkaido  -  could be best launched from the island of Okinawa, sometimes called Japan's fifth home island.

From there, Japan’s main south island of Kyushu could be attacked.

Thus, the invasion of Okinawa was planned.

The US army, however, insisted that the liberation of the Philippine islands from occupying Japanese forces was more important.

There were arguments for and against the immediate liberation of the Philippines.

The Philippines were now blockaded by the US navy. Occupying Japanese forces were stranded and could not continue the war. Without supplies, they would be forced to surrender eventually to the locals. An invasion of the Philippines was unnecessary. It would be a waste of American lives.

The US navy wanted to bypass the Philippines and secure Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands south of Japan.

Eventually, FDR was persuaded by the army to liberate the Philippines.

The island of Formosa, held by Japan, and Japanese bases on the China coast were to be attacked by air.

With the invasion of the Philippines by the Japanese in December 1941, President Quezon appointed his secretary, Jose Vargas, secretary of defense, and, shortly afterwards, mayor of Manila.

The Japanese ordered the Commonwealth dissolved in January 1942 and appointed Vargas to chair a commission   -   an interim or provisional government.

In June 1943, the Japanese Prime Minister, Hideki Tojo, promised an independent Philippine republic and appointed a committee of Filipinos to prepare it.

The range of the B-29 Superfortress was 1,600 nautical miles. From bases in India, the B-29 could reach targets in Thailand. From bases in China the B-29 could reach targets Manchuria, Korea, the south of the Japanese home island of Kyushu, and Formosa. From bases in the Mariana Islands, the B-29 could reach targets in southern Japan   -   the southern half of Honshu and all of Kyushu and Shikoku.

Target Tokyo

FIRST B-29 RAID ON JAPAN from Saipan

Nov. 24, 1944

Narrated by Ronald Reagan

First B-29 bombing raid over the Japanese home islands from Saipan in the Marianas Islands.

First attack on Tokyo since the 1942 Jimmy Doolittle raid.

The target: Nakajima Aircraft Company Musashi engine plant in a suburb of Tokyo.

The claim in this documentary film, that B-29s caused severe damage to their targets, was incorrect.

Flying over the target at 27,000 to 32,000 feet altitude, the B-29 formations were disrupted by the jet stream, a 200-mph wind from the west, and accurate bombing was impossible. Also, clouds covered the target. Only 25% of the planes dropped bombs close to the target and it was barely damaged.

9

B-29 bombing from 31,000 feet

The Americans planned to conduct a campaign of precision bombing of Japan from high altitudes, with the aid of radar, until February or March 1945. Then they would launch a campaign of area bombing with incendiary bombs, or napalm, from low altitudes.

In any case, precision bombing proved ineffective. Dropped from high altitudes, bombs were blown off-course by the wind and missed their targets.

Iwo Jima

February 19 – March 26, 1945

Iwo Jima was a Japanese air base.

Japanese fighter planes on Iwo Jima attacked American bombers, which flew without fighter cover, on their way to bomb Japan.

The Japanese on Iwo Jima also gave Japan warning of the approaching American bombers.

The Japanese fighter planes also attacked the air bases recently captured by the Americans in the Mariana Islands

The Americans wanted to take Iwo Jima as a base for fighters that could accompany bombers to Japan.

1945

Major-General Curtis E. Lemay, Commander of the 21st Bomber Command, arrived in the Marianas from China in early January 1945.

Major-General Curtis Lemay at a briefing.

The Air Force planned to end the high-altitude precision bombing campaign in March 1945 and concentrate on low-level incendiary bombing.

In February, after consultations with planners and his advisors, LeMay ordered B-29s to strip their guns and armor and to bomb their targets at night instead of day, from the much lower altitude of 5,000 feet, and to bomb with napalm (incendiary bombs) instead of dynamite.

This allowed the bombers to carry less fuel and carry more napalm bombs.

Some pilots ignored the order and secretly carried their guns and gun crews.

FIREBOMBING RAIDS ON TOKYO during the night of March 9-10, 1945 ...

A fire raid on 10 March 1945 burned more than 15 square miles of Tokyo's industrial centre and world's most populous area.

In the above photo, Major-General LeMay, centre, with pipe, Commander of the 21st Bomber Command, and Brigadier General Lauris Norstad, Chief of Staff for the 20th Air Force, receives a resume of the raid from Brigadier-General Thomas S. Power (on the right), Senior Officer on the raid and leader of the B-29 units from Guam.

Other units flew from Tinian and Saipan.

The bombers flew in single file at 5,600 feet over eastern Tokyo. The first planes, to mark the target, arrived shortly after midnight.

Eastern Tokyo was laid bare. An estimated 80,000 to 100,000 Japanese were killed and one million made homeless.

Fourteen American planes and some 96 men were lost, less than the 5% Lemay had anticipated.

March to August 1945

Bombing military and industrial sites in Germany and Japan with high explosives was destructive but more was needed. Thus, the firebombing of the German city of Dresden in February 1945. And thus the firebombing of Japanese cities  -  with high-incendiary phosphorus causing "firestorms".

Allied Plan to Invade Japan

1945 - 1946

Operation Downfall

X-Day set for November 1, 1945

American map of Japanese "Home Islands", 1945 | The Digital ...

Four maps, one for each of the four Japanese home islands: Hokkaidō, Honshū (the "mainland"), Shikoku and Kyūshū. 22 August 1945

The Allied plan to invade the Japanese home islands was called Operation Downfall.

The Allies, led by the Americans, planned to invade Japan in two separate attacks.

The first attack, called Operation Olympic, would be on the southern island of Kyusha, launched from the south and southeast. It was scheduled for November 1945.

The second attack, called Operation Coronet, would be on the main Japanese home island of Honshu, launched from the east. It was scheduled for March 1946.

The invasion would cost an estimated 2 million American casualties.

The submarine in the Pacific War

Japan had the best and most diverse submarine fleet in the war. It built the biggest and fastest submarines. Japan had also the best torpedoes.

American submarines   -   less than 2 percent of the U. S. navy   -   sank over one-third of the Japanese navy.

Of 25 Japanese carriers, 20 were sunk   -   eight by American submarines.

American submarines sank about two-thirds of the Japanese merchant marine.

Japanese submarines were used mostly against warships and thus sank far fewer American merchant ships.

In the Pacific war, the Americans lost 52 of 336 submarines. The British lost three subs.

The Japanese lost 128 of 174/186 submarines, more than two-thirds of its submarine fleet.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the Indian National Army (INA)

Subhash Chandra Bose (1897 - 1945), an Indian nationalist and opposed to British colonial rule in India, sided with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan against the Allies in WW2.

In 1943 Bose recreated the collaborationist Indian National Army (INA) that fought with the Japanese Imperial Army (IJA) against the Americans and British in Burma and Northeast India.

The INA committed war crimes against Allied POWs and local populations with the IJA in Southeast Asia.

At war's end Bose fled Singapore in a plane bound for Japan. Bose hoped to reach the USSR. He was killed when his plane crashed on the way in Taiwan on August 18.

Aung San of Burma

Htein Lin ("Aung San") (1915 - 1947) was a Burman, the ethnic majority in Burma.

Aung San was a nationalist and opposed to British colonial rule in Burma.

Aung San was one of the founders of the Burmese Communist Party in 1939.

With the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), Aung San organised and led a collaborationist Burmese army, called the Burma Independence Army (BIA), which accompanied the IJA in its invasion of Burma from Thailand in 1942 and fought against the Allies.

BIA soldiers destroyed many villages of the Karen, a large ethnic minority, and massacred many Karens.

Aung San and the IJA set up the collaborationist provisional Burmese government headed by Ba Maw in 1942.

One year later, in 1943, Japan granted Burma independence, Burma formally became a partner of Japan and declared war on Britain and the U. S.

The BIA, renamed the Burma National Army (BNA) by the Japanese, fought against the guerrillas of the Karen, Kachin, Chin, Mon and other ethnic groups allied to the Americans and British.

The BNA killed downed Allied airmen and Allied POWs or turned them over to the Japanese.

As the tide of war turned in 1944, Aung San decided to go over to the Allies.

In mid-May 1945, after considerable negotiation, Admiral Louis Mountbatten, Supreme Allied Commander of Southeast Asia, accepted Aung San's offer to join the Allies against the Japanese.

The BNA was disarmed, reformed, renamed the Patriotic Burmese Forces, and joined the British in fighting the Japanese at the very end of the war in mid-1945.

Following the defeat of the Japanese in August 1945, the head of the collaborationist Burmese government, Ba Maw, fled. He was captured by the Allies in Thailand, imprisoned in Allied-occupied Japan, released without charge in the following year, 1946, and sent back to Burma.

After the Japanese government agreed to surrender unconditionally on August 15, 1945, Japanese troops in Burma headed for Thailand to surrender to the Allies. But many were trapped and annihilated by vengeful Karen guerrillas. Between June and September 1945 at least 12,500 Japanese soldiers were killed by the Karen.
