Why the Russians were the first to send a man into space, before the Americans

Inter-service rivalry and government obstruction hampered American efforts

Declassified:

Sputnik

Documentary (2007)

(6 clips)

The US could have put a satellite into orbit well before the Soviets. But obstruction by Washington officials thwarted the scientists. Eventually, the Soviets were first, in 1957, and dealt the US the most devastating blow to its morale and prestige in the 20th century. The US would not recover for many years, until it landed men on the moon in 1969.

This recent video introduces a new twist to the story. Losing to the Soviets was no big deal after all. Actually, it was all for the best. Nice and legal, too. Tell that to 170 million Americans.

How could President Eisenhower, who as captain of the West Point football team resorted to any mean trick to win, let the Soviets beat the US into space? The story at the time, it must be recalled, was that Ike was surrounded by aides and advisors who were in the pay of foreign governments.

The Cosmonaut Cover-up

1999 documentary recalls the story that both cosmonauts, Ilyushin and Gagarin, orbited the earth in separate satellites five days apart: Ilyushin, first, on April 7, crashed in China, so Gagarin was sent on April 12.

Red Space

Myth and Misconception

(one of two episodes)

This documentary recounts that Ilyushin denied being with the first group of cosmonauts. Soviet archives recently released back him up. He maintained that the April 7 flight was the last test flight before Gagarin's flight and that it contained a dummy rather than a cosmonaut. Still, some believe Illyushin felt obligated to deny involvement with the cosmonauts and that he was actually the first man in space.
