The
Space Race From the end of WW2 in 1945
to 1969 the Americans and Soviets raced each other to be the first to put 1. a satellite in space, 2. a man in space and 3. a man on the moon.
The Soviets were: First to send a satellite into space and earth orbit (1957) Sputnik 1 First to send a satellite close to the moon (1959) Luna 1 First to send a probe to the moon (1959) Luna 2 First to send a man into space and earth orbit (1961) Yuri Gagarin First to send
a woman into space (1963)
First to conduct a space walk (1965)
First to send a probe to another planet (Venus) (1965-6) First to soft-land an unmanned probe on the moon (1966)
First to conduct unmanned lunar orbits (1966)

The Apollo Project
The Soviets never sent a man to the moon. Only
the Americans sent man to the moon - 12 astronauts in six missions between July 1969 and December 1972.

The Columbia returned to Earth on July 24, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean,
780 nautical miles southwest of Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands and 220 n. m. south of Johnston Atoll. The capsule landed
upside-down. Divers arrived soon.
Shortly after splashdown, President Richard Nixon greets the three astronauts in their quarantine chamber
on board the aircraft carrier USS Hornet. The astronauts remained in quarantine for three weeks, in case they had been contaminated by biological substances
on the moon. (There are none.)

dramatisation in four episodes Heading the Soviets is Sergei Korolev. Heading the Americans is Wernher Von Braun. The Americans are far
ahead, but they could be much farther. Inter-service rivalry and technical failures cause the Americans to fall far behind the Soviets. The Soviets are the first to launch a satellite. They are the first
to send a man into space.
Yet, in the end, the
Soviets lose the edge and the Americans are the first to land a man on the moon. Episode 1.
