The Space Race

From the end of WW2 in 1945 to 1969 the Americans and Soviets raced each other to be the first to put

1. a satellite in space,

2. a man in space and

3. a man on the moon.

The Soviets were:

First to send a satellite into space and earth orbit (1957)

Sputnik 1

First to send a satellite close to the moon (1959)

Luna 1

First to send a probe to the moon (1959)

Only the Americans sent man to the moon - 12 astronauts in six missions between July 1969 and December 1972.

The spacecraft consisted of two components or parts:

1. Command and Service Module (CSM), which carried the Lunar Module (LM), in two parts:

Command Module (CM), for the three crewmen

Service Module (SM), for propulsion and storage

2. Lunar Module (LM), which landed with two men on the moon surface and returned to the CSM, in two stages:

Descent, for landing on the moon surface

Ascent, for returning from the moon surface to the CSM in lunar orbit

The spacecraft   -   the Command & Service Modules (CSM), Columbia, and Lunar Module (LM), Eagle   -   separated from the third stage of the Saturn V rocket and entered lunar orbit three days later.

The Apollo spacecraft had three parts:

Command Module (CM), piloted by Collins, carried the Lunar Module (LM), orbited the moon as the LM  visited the moon surface, and returned to Earth with the three astronauts

Service Module (SM), detached from CM and cast off during re-emtry

Lunar Module (LM), called Eagle - in two stages:

1. descent stage, lands on moon with two astronauts, pilot Aldrin and mission commander Armstrong

2. ascent stage, returns with Aldrin and Armstrong to CSM in lunar orbit

The Lunar Module (LM) was discarded before the CSM headed back to Earth.

The Command and Service Module (CSM) was called Columbia and the Lunar Module (LM) was called Eagle.

We came in peace for all mankind.

Space Race

2005 BBC documentary dramatisation in four episodes

Heading the Soviets is Sergei Korolev. Heading the Americans is Wernher Von Braun.

The Americans are far ahead, but they could be much farther. Inter-service rivalry and technical failures cause the Americans to fall far behind the Soviets. The Soviets are the first to launch a satellite. They are the first to send a man into space.

Yet, in the end, the Soviets lose the edge and the Americans are the first to land a man on the moon.
