Erich Ludendorff and Adolf Hitler marched together in a failed attempt to topple the Bavarian government in Munich in 1923.

Hitler and the Great War leader Gen.

Erich Ludendorf failed to take over the

government of Bavaria by force in 1923.

Hitler was sentenced to jail for treason.

In his nine months in Lansberg Prison,

he dictated the book to his deputy

Rudolf Hess. He described Germany's

problems and the required remedies.

By the mid-1930s the book was a world

-wide best-seller.

Horst Wessel

Horst Wessel (1907 - 1930) was the commander of a Nazi storm troop in Berlin. He composed a song Die Fahne Hoch in 1929. He was murdered in 1930.

The original film, commissioned in 1933, was titled Horst Wessel and depicted the beer hall politics and street battles in Germany in the 1920s when the Communists were a dominant force.

The film was banned for being too realistic but eventually released after changes were made in the main character, several scenes and the title.

Hitler with Nazi Party members in 1933. With Hitler are his oldest and closest associates.

Standing beside Hitler, to the right in the photo, is Hermann Göring (Goering) (1893 - 1946). Standing beside Göring, to the right, is Heinrich Himmler (1900 - 1945). On the far right in the photo is Rudolf Hess (1894 - 1987). Standing behind Hitler and Göring is Ernst Röhm (1887 - 1934), Hitler's oldest associate.

Göring, Röhm, Himmler and Hess were with Hitler in the failed Munich putsch of 1923. Immediately to the left of Hitler and standing behind him is Josef Goebbels (1897 - 1945). Goebbels joined the party in 1924.

Röhm was purged in 1934.

Hess defected to Britain in 1941.

Göring, Himmler and Goebbels retained much of their authority and influence to the end of the Second World War. Göring, Himmler and Hess survived the war.

Himmler committed suicide after his capture by the Allies in 1945.

Göring and Hess were tried by the Allies as war criminals. Göring committed suicide before his scheduled execution in 1946. Hess was sentenced to life in prison and committed suicide in 1987.

Einstein quits Germany

Albert Einstein, a German scientist who lived in Berrlin, was visiting the United States when Hitler became chancellor in January 1933. The Nazis were notorious anti-semites views. Einstein, who was Jewish, decided not to return home. He lived with his wife in Belgium and Britain before settling in Prinction, New Jersey at the end of the year.
